Évènements avec la Maison de l'Europe / Events with the House of Europe

This page is in English, since the organization of the conferences and events mentioned here will entail cooperation with non-French speakers.

The House of Europe promotes European initiatives and tries to explain to the general public why the European Union is important for them and how it links to them. By working with the House of Europe, the idea for FAImaison is to show that the topics we are active on on a local scale are also being carried by other groups and people in other European countries. Thus, these topics are both EU-wise and clearly impacting the local scene. Act locally, think globally!

See our official page for this set of events.

Topics for talks

The topics on which we want to organize events with the House of Europe are the following. For each topic, a list of partners we could consider inviting is given. Events are most likely to be conferences, but they can also include workshops or whatever thing one thinks about.

Topic 1: Initiatives and groups in Europe acting in order to defend the rights to privacy, access to information, free speech and free thought over the Internet through the institutional game

Some possible approaches for this talk: the guests can talk about their own organization and what they do in their countries or we focus more on the European Union and some particular topics/dossiers (net neutrality, data protection, …) or a mix of both and do a sort of comparison.

Question: how to make local people feel concerned? It could be great to have local EU elections candidate if we want to talk about some EU-related topics.

Topic 2: Community-based networks and DIY/associative Internet Access Providers in Europe

We can talk about the FAImaison's wifi deployment for the local part, and then compare with the other guys. Could do a panel or something?

Topic 3: Europe-based "humanitarian" activism turned towards outside Europe

  • The Telecomix cluster and the help provided in Tunisia, Egypt, Syria and other heavily troubled places (can potentially have people from France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and the United States)
  • NGOs that somehow worked with these activists : Reporters Without Borders (France), FIDH (France)
  • More ideas welcome :)

Try to show that it is not that hard to help people that are far away even without moving from the comfortable chair.

Topic 4: Free and Open Source Software advocacy groups in Europe

  • The Gluglug and their new “100%-free” laptop (United Kingdom)
  • The Free Software Foundation Europe (European Union)
  • April (France)
  • Ubuntu-Tunisia/Hackerspace.tn (although this is technically not Europe)
  • Any other LUG…

Possible focus on:

  1. Microsoft contracts with the European Parliament and the French Ministry of Defense and what it means in terms of security and democratic processes; their involvment in Tunisia;

Topic 5: Projects in Europe that use the Internet to improve participatory democracy

  • Memopol, standing for Political Memory (European Union)
  • Regards citoyens and the subprojects Nos députés and Nos sénateurs, acting for better institutional transparency through open data (France)
  • Dieren Theater, comparable to Nos députés (Belgium)
  • Lobbyplag, mapping Members of European Parliament's position regarding the Data Protection directive (European Union)
  • Parltrack, “spreading datalove in the European Union” (European Union)
  • Globaleaks, an online platform to promote transparency by easing safe whistleblowing (projects are using it notably in the Netherlands and Italy)
  • Edward Snowden, a good friend of mine (error: country not found: citizenship revoked by motherland)

Ordering and organization of the set of events

Each of these topics is probably worth organizing an associated event. The way the events will be ordered can be important so that they are better understood by the public. Here is how it may turn out:

  • on Monday, 17th of February in the evening, an event focused on the Net neutrality issue in the context of the telecoms single market dossier of the European Parliament; a vote that will happen at the European Parliament on February 27th, and the goal of the event is to make people aware of the danger of some parts of the text that will be voted;
  • on Tuesday, 18th of February during working hours, a “call your Member of the European Parliament (MEP)” workshop will take place at the House of Europe: following the Save The Internet recommendations, we will be using La Quadrature's PiPhone and call MEPs to put forward arguments against allowing ISPs from balkanising people's Internet access;
  • on March 18th, a conference was about FLOSS, why it is important for democracy and saveguarding privacy in Europe, and also what is the current situation of laws or institutional recommandations regarding FLOSS in Europe;
  • on April 23rd: event on DIY ISPs and community-based networks, more precisely about activist throughout Europe who build networks to promote network neutrality, with the participation of a member of Freifunk Chemnitz (Saxony, Germany) and of Net du Kermeur (Brittany, France).
  • on May 10th, we will treat tools that help improve participatory democracy during the House of Europe's events in Cosmopols
  • on May 16, we would like to have some questions on digital liberties ask to candidates during a contradictory debate happening at Cosmopolis (the elections are on May 24)
  • on May 17th we will do a critical analysis of what was said by the candidates to help the general public understand their position regarding fundamental rights on the Internet.
  • we could do topic 3 in June.
