Évènements avec la Maison de l'Europe / Events with the House of Europe

Agir local, penser global, oh yeah !

La suite en anglais.

This page is in English, since the organization of the conferences and events mentioned here will entail cooperation with non-French speakers.

The House of Europe promotes European initiatives and tries to explain to the general public why the European Union is important for them and how it links to them. By working with the House of Europe, the idea for FAImaison is to show that the topics we are active on on a local scale are also being carried by other groups and people in other European countries. Thus, these topics are both EU-wise and clearly impacting the local scene. Act locally, think globally!

See our official page for this set of events.

Topics for talks

The topics on which we want to organize events with the House of Europe are the following. For each topic, a list of partners we could consider inviting is given. Events are most likely to be conferences, but they can also include workshops or whatever thing one thinks about.

Topic 1: Initiatives and groups in Europe acting in order to defend the rights to privacy, access to information, free speech and free thought over the Internet through the institutional game

Some possible approaches for this talk: the guests can talk about their own organization and what they do in their countries or we focus more on the European Union and some particular topics/dossiers (net neutrality, data protection, …) or a mix of both and do a sort of comparison.

Question: how to make local people feel concerned? It could be great to have local EU elections candidate if we want to talk about some EU-related topics.

Topic 2: Community-based networks and DIY/associative Internet Access Providers in Europe

We can talk about the FAImaison's wifi deployment for the local part, and then compare with the other guys. Could do a panel or something?

Topic 3: Europe-based "humanitarian" activism turned towards outside Europe

Try to show that it is not that hard to help people that are far away even without moving from the comfortable chair.

Topic 4: Free and Open Source Software advocacy groups in Europe

Possible focus on:

  1. Microsoft contracts with the European Parliament and the French Ministry of Defense and what it means in terms of security and democratic processes; their involvment in Tunisia;

Topic 5: Projects in Europe that use the Internet to improve participatory democracy

Ordering and organization of the set of events

Each of these topics is probably worth organizing an associated event. The way the events will be ordered can be important so that they are better understood by the public. Here is how it may turn out:
